Frequently Asked Questions

It’s natural to have questions before starting therapy.

Taking the first step towards counselling, psychotherapy or hypnotherapy can feel daunting, particularly if you’ve never experienced therapy before. These frequently asked questions explain a little more about what you can expect from New Path Therapies and working with Rachael.

If there’s anything else you’d like to know, you’re always welcome to ask during your free 20-minute introductory call.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?
You don’t need to be experiencing a particular problem or have reached a crisis before seeking therapy.

You might be struggling with anxiety, panic attacks, low confidence, difficult emotions or experiences from your past. Equally, you may simply feel overwhelmed, stuck or know that something in your life needs to change.

Therapy provides a safe space to explore what’s happening and begin understanding what you need to move forward.
What’s the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
There is considerable overlap between counselling and psychotherapy.

Counselling can provide a supportive space to explore current difficulties, thoughts and emotions, while psychotherapeutic work may also look more deeply at underlying experiences and patterns and how your past could be influencing your present.
‍
As a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, my work considers both what is happening in your life now and how different life experiences may be impacting you on a deeper level.
What happens in my first therapy session?
Your first session is an opportunity to begin getting to know one another and talk more about what has brought you to therapy.

There is no expectation that you should immediately discuss anything you don’t feel ready to talk about. I will listen, ask questions where appropriate and help you explore what you would like from therapy. The relationship is built gradually and at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
What if I don’t know what to talk about?
That’s absolutely fine.

Many people begin therapy knowing that they are struggling but finding it difficult to explain exactly why. You don’t need to prepare what you’re going to say or arrive with a list of things to discuss. Sometimes simply starting the conversation helps you begin to understand what is happening.
Is therapy confidential?
Confidentiality is an important part of the therapeutic relationship and helps create a space where you can talk openly.
‍
I will fully explain confidentiality to you before you begin working together, including any circumstances where there may be a professional or legal obligation to share information. If you have any concerns about confidentiality, you are welcome to discuss these before beginning therapy.
How many therapy sessions will I need?
There isn’t a single answer because everyone comes to therapy for different reasons. Some people may want support with a particular issue, while others may benefit from exploring experiences and patterns over a longer period.

We will discuss your needs together and your therapy can be reviewed as you progress. There is no expectation that everyone should follow the same therapeutic journey.
What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation and focused attention to create a calm state in which therapeutic techniques can be used to work with particular thoughts, feelings, behaviours or emotional responses.

Despite some common misconceptions, you are not asleep or unconscious during hypnotherapy. You remain aware and in control throughout the process.
Will I lose control during hypnotherapy?
No. Hypnotherapy is not the same as stage or entertainment hypnosis. You remain in control and cannot be forced to do or say something against your wishes. Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process. Before we begin, I will explain what the process will look and feel like and you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions.
What age clients do you work with?
I provide therapy for adults aged 18 and over, including both men and women. People come to therapy at many different stages of adulthood and there is no right or wrong time to seek support.

You can briefly explain what has brought you to New Path Therapies, ask questions about my therapeutic style and get a sense of whether it feels like I am someone you could comfortably work with.
